A Collection of Fun Guided Calligraphy Tutorials (AKA Lesson 6)

Lesson 6 of the Beginner’s Modern Calligraphy Online Course dropped today, and even if you haven’t been following along because you’re beyond the beginner stage, I suspect you'll enjoy this one! It’s a fun, freeing lesson that’s perfect for anyone who has mastered the basics of pointed pen calligraphy.

In the last video of Lesson 6, we'll make this watercolor calligraphy medallion together. (The lesson includes a printable set of detailed instructions.)

This lesson is just fun. At this point, students who have been keeping up with the course are no longer beginners, so we get to play with some intermediate techniques and projects. If you're only casually poking around the lesson, feel free to explore the instructional videos that pique your interest. Below, you'll find a list of what to expect:

Video 1: How to Use Watercolors to Write Calligraphy

Watercolor calligraphy is invaluable because it lets you practice anywhere without worrying about ink spills, and it gives you access to endless “inks” without buying multiple bottles. As the video demonstrates, it also creates beautiful, customizable gradated effects that are fun to explore.

In Video 1, we'll create a casual "joy list" together.

Video 2: How to Write Gold Calligraphy

If you can write with regular watercolors, you can write with metallic watercolors. In Video 2, I’ll quickly demonstrate how to write opaque gold calligraphy on dark paper.

Video 3: Project – Chic Inky Poppies Mail Art

In Video 3, we get to make one of my favorite projects together: chic poppies mail art. I love the poppies motif and its glorious ink smudges because of the reminder that imperfection can be stunning.

As a side note, student Isabel already took the project in this video head-on, and what she created is proof that the motif looks gorgeous on most envelope colors. Her deep green mail art feels especially appropriate for the festive holiday season!

Video 4: Why and When to Do Calligraphy Drills

For many of us, the concept of calligraphy drills can be murky. Everyone knows they’re good for improving your skills with a pointed pen, but how often should you actually do them? In this video, I’ll cover that question.

Video 4 includes links to several (free) calligraphy drill worksheets, like the one pictured above.

Video 5: “Dazzling Diamonds” Calligraphy Medallion

In the last video of Lesson 6 (and the course itself), we’re going to take on the ultimate calligraphy drill: a calligraphy medallion. This video includes a detailed set of instructions to guarantee your success!

If you haven't been taking part in this course because you're beyond the beginner level, I invite you to swoop in here at the very end! Video 3 (the mail art) really is a fun project for any calligrapher, and that calligraphy medallion from Video 5 is *sooo* stunning. You can click here to be taken straight to Lesson 6.

Course Access Ends on January 6th

If you are not a Premium Plus member (that's the $15/month tier) or you don't own the previous version of The Beginner's Modern Calligraphy Online Course, your access to this course will end on January 6, 2026. Once we wrap up this course at the beginning of January, we'll take a couple weeks' break. Then, we'll launch into an intermediate course that covers advanced tools, copperplate calligraphy, flourishing, bouncy calligraphy, and inventing your own calligraphy styles. If you can think of anything else you'd like to see in that course, email me or post a message on Discord! I'm really excited to get to do an intermediate course together, and any input you have will help me to make it that much more enjoyable.

I hope you enjoy what I have prepared for you in this lesson! As always, I'm here if you have any questions. Thanks so much for reading, and have a good rest of your day.

Warmly,
