Gouache is Back!

To me, the beauty of pointed pen calligraphy is the freedom of color scheme. Opaque yellow letters on and illustrations on brown paper? No problem. White calligraphy on black cardstock? Bring it on. Gouache will get you there!

Gouache (rhymes with "squash") is essentially ultra-concentrated watercolor. You mix it with water -- and some gum arabic, if you like -- then write. I prefer Schmincke calligraphy gouache, but it's difficult to source here in the US. Luckily, I've got a UK connection who helps me get it (thanks, Simon!), and he just sent me over a fresh batch. On Creativity and Parenthood

I was 24 years old when I started TPK. For seven years, TPK was my only baby, and something I worked on day and night (just look at how long my early blog posts could be)! Now, the name of the game is balance, and I reflected on that yesterday as we celebrated Pia's birthday. My children are my world, but I also continue explore my creativity through making art and calligraphy -- taking that time for myself makes me a calmer, better parent. I love that my kids are seeing that I follow a passion, and I hope that they can follow that example when they find something they love doing someday. Here's to ever-growing kids (happy first birthday, sweet Pia!), and to ever-growing creativity.
